United Hardware Distributing Co., a distributor of hardware merchandise located in Plymouth MN, is looking for a Sr. Merchandising Manager to join our Lawn & Garden Department. Responsibilities include selecting merchandise, negotiating for best pricing & terms, Buying Market programs & other marketing programs. Interview vendors, research competition & develop advertising promotions. Follow-up on purchase orders & maintain item file data on the mainframe. Computer knowledge & strong verbal & interpersonal skills required along with previous merchandising experience. Salary depends on experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Senior Merchandising Manager
REPORTS TO (TITLE): Divisional Merchandising Director
DEPARTMENT: Merchandising
LOCATION: Plymouth
SALARY GRADE: 15
DATE: October 1999

POSITION SUMMARY:
Selecting and planning inventory for department. Negotiating with vendors for best product and pricing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Selects merchandise; interviews vendors; negotiates pricing to maximize gross profit dollars; researches competition; develops advertising promotions; performs line reviews; researches new items; updates pricing.

2. Work with E-3 to reduce inventory on slow moving merchandise.

3. Develops programs for dealer shows: negotiates with vendors for show specials, costs and dating; selects product and promotable goods; creates order forms; creates marketing sheets.

4. Attends national shows to meet with new vendors and gain new ideas.

5. Maintains systems. Codes computer files. Creates bulletins for seasonal or new merchandise. Maintains information on cambar - description, cost, dealer cost, pack, weights, retails, etc.

6. Markets merchandise. Develops bulletins for inventory reduction, seasonal merchandise and new product.

7. Performs circular selection for 25 - 30 promotions annually.

8. Sends information to district managers on product changes, problems, etc.

9. Updates catalog on a continual basis.

10. Answers calls regarding dealer concerns on cataloged information, company services and suggestions. Addresses complaints. Provides technical information and application concerning products.

11. Interacts with other departments: Accounting, Advertising, National Accounts, Sales, Marketing, IS, Warehouse.

12. Supervises Associate Buyers, Assistant Buyers and Clerical Assistants as it applies.

13. Responsible for negotiating better programs and promotions with existing vendors.

14. Establish gross margins that are profitable for United Hardware Distributing Co. and its dealer-customers.

15. Insure proper show programs through merchandise selection, and vendor representation


OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
May train and delegate duties to lower-level department personnel.
Insures associate buyer job description is performed within the department.
Performs other work related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS and/or KNOWLEDGE:
Bachelors Degree in Business Administration or similar field, or equivalent education or experience.
Two years' professional buying experience in related industry.
Strong written, verbal, analytical, negotiating and interpersonal skills.
Ability to organize and prioritize work, and to meet deadlines.

Strong written, verbal, analytical, negotiating and interpersonal skills are required.
